CMYK Screen Print “Invictus”

The project brief was to create an image that connected with a piece of text, and was printed utilizing CMYK ink on screens

  • I decided to take my favorite piece of poetry Invictus, by William Ernest Henley and create a piece that captured the imagery it created

    • I found the piece “Ship on Stormy Seas” by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, and was immediately struck that this was the perfect image

  • I uploaded the image into Illustrator, and cropped it to fit the limitations of my printing screen

  • Once it was sized correctly, I converted the image into a bitmap, and then into a CMYK file

    • The color layers were subsequently separated and printed onto transparencies, including several points of registration

  • These were transferred one by one onto my screen using photo emulsion

  • Each layer was printed individually, with a custom color combination to make the inks we had on hand work for CMYK printing

  • The final images were squared up and edges torn
